What's the difference between a registrar and a celebrant?

Registrars conduct legal ceremonies at register offices or approved venues. They follow set scripts with limited personalisation and strict time slots. Independent celebrants create completely bespoke ceremonies, without time restrictions, and you can hold the ceremony anywhere you want and can include anything you want. The options are endless.

Are celebrant-led ceremonies legal?

In England, no – you'll need to do a quick signing at your local register office separately. In Scotland and some other places, celebrants can conduct legally binding ceremonies. The law is changing gradually, but for now in England, it's a two-step process.

How long does the register office signing take?

Usually about 10-15 minutes. You'll need two witnesses. Most couples do this a few days or a week before their ceremony, though you can do it on the same day if you prefer.

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as you've set your wedding date! Popular dates (especially May-September Saturdays) book up quickly. That said, I can sometimes accommodate shorter notice if my diary allows.

Do we need to meet in person?

Not necessarily. While I love meeting couples in person, we can do everything via video call if that's easier. Many of my couples live in different cities or countries before their wedding, and we make it work brilliantly online.

How many planning meetings do we get?

It’s usually 2-3’ Some couples need less, some need more support and guidance. I’ll adapt to what works for you.

What if we don't know what we want yet?

That's completely normal! Most couples have a vague idea but need help figuring out the details. Through our planning process, I'll ask questions, offer suggestions, and help clarify your vision.

How long is a typical ceremony?

Usually anything from 25-40 minutes, but it's entirely up to you. Want something short and sweet? Perfect. Want a longer ceremony with more readings and rituals? That works too.

Can we include religious elements?

Absolutely. Your ceremony can include prayers, blessings, religious readings, or any spiritual elements that are meaningful to you.

Can we write our own vows?

Yes! I can help you write them, give you prompts and guidance, or you can write them entirely yourselves. We can also mix and match – traditional vows with personal additions, or completely bespoke.

What symbolic rituals can we include?

Ring warming, handfasting, Celtic stone ceremony, unity candles, sand ceremonies, wine blending – loads of options. I've also created some unique rituals of my own. We'll discuss what resonates with you.

Can we include our pet in the ceremony?

Yes! Dogs, cats, whatever – if they're part of your family, we can definitely involve them.

Where can we have our ceremony?

Anywhere that's meaningful to you. Indoor or outdoor, venue or private property, city or countryside. The only restriction is that you have permission from the location owner.

What if it rains for our outdoor ceremony?

Accepted Answer

We'll have a backup plan. Most venues with outdoor spaces have indoor options, or you can hire a marquee. Part of the planning process is making sure we're covered for all weather possibilities.

Do you provide sound equipment?

For smaller, intimate ceremonies, no equipment is usually needed – my theatre training means I know how to project! For larger gatherings or outdoor spaces, I have my own PA equipment.

What do you wear?

I'll dress appropriately for your wedding style and venue. Smart, professional, and in keeping with your celebration's tone. If you've got specific preferences (colors to avoid, formality level), just let me know.

How much do you charge?

Ceremonies from £950. Additional costs may apply for travel expenses (outside Greater London), accommodation (for destination weddings), and props for symbolic rituals.

What's included in your fee?

Everything: free introductory meeting, planning support sessions, bespoke ceremony script, professional ceremony delivery on the day, digital copies of all materials and a printed copy of your vow booklet as a keepsake of the day.

50% deposit to secure your date, with the remaining balance due one month before your wedding.

What's your cancellation policy?

The deposit is non-refundable (unless I'm unable to fulfill the booking). If you need to postpone, I'll do everything I can to accommodate your new date with no additional fee.

I spent 10 years as a professional actor (theatre and TV), followed by 20 years in West End box office and marketing. I trained as a celebrant with the Academy of Modern Celebrancy and I'm an Associate Member of The Celebrant Guild.
